Talkin' 'Bout Montauk

On Sunday, the 7th, we left Wing's Neck and headed to Montauk, which is at the eastern tip of Long Island. This is the launching pad for deep-sea fishermen to go 100 miles into the Atlantic to the edge of the Continental Shelf for tuna, swordfish and other sportsfish. This will be our own launchpad to head southwest to Maryland on building northeasternerly winds and seas.

Here is a Concordia yawl reaching to the south off the eastern tip of Montaul, shortly after sunrise. Brio followed her out of Montauk and soon left her behind as we sped southwest to Maryland.

Things calmed down in Montauk the evening before once we settled in for the night.

Fishing seems to be a big deal in Montauk!
But there's more to life than just hooking a record catch.

On Tuesday morning, we cast off for our trip across the New York Bight from Montauk to Ocean City, Maryland.

In our next post, we will describe our trip with all of its excitement! It is over 200 nautical miles across the Bight. We traveled with a building northeast wind and with a following sea that started off at perhaps a foot high. By the time we reached one-third of the trip. the waves were running perhaps 4 feet. By the time we reached the area off the Delaware Bay, the waves had grown to five to six feet.
Cheers,
Brio
