Sailors alike know Blue Hill Bay as a paradise for exploration and delightful views, whether with or without winds. Andiamo crossed the Bar at Bass Harbor Head and headed north up Blue Hill Bay to the top, northwestern corner of the Bay. There lies a jewel of an enclosure, Blue Hill Harbor. Inside the Harbor lies many classic boats as well as those of a modern design.

Here's the view as we came into the Harbor:

And the view from the mooring we grabbed at the head of the Harbor.

Once secure at the mooring, we called out to a fellow on the motor boad ahead of us, asking for directions to the nearby Hannaford's Grocery Store. He offered to give us a ride there and back. The sailor community is alive and kicking here.

To our north, we have a beautiful view of Blue Hill with its south-facing cliffs created by glacial "plucking."

Notice the rocks ahead of the lobster boat. This is at half-high tide, meaning that these rocks will be covered by water at high tide. And at low tide, they are a bony structure that divides the upper Harbor like a finger sticking out into the water. Boaters, beware!

Today (9/11) is a day of remembrance. It is exquisitely beautiful here, but 25 years ago was a terrifying day. We are fortunate to have survived.

From Blue Hill Harbor, we will head south back down to the bottom of Blue Hill Bay and turn west to head up northwest along Eggemoggin Reach to Penobscot Bay.

Cheers,

Andiamo
