From Owl's Head to Christmas Cove
These names create powerful images for Maine cruisers. Rather than going out the Bay by following the shipping channel, we decided to hug the shore and weave between the shoals, rocks and buoys. That helped shelter us from the strong and building northwest winds. It also meant that we could see the local "color" such as Port Clyde and Harbor Island Harbor on our way to rounding Pemaquid Point.
First, here's a video of going south in the Muscle Ridge Channel. Notice how smooth the water is. Not far to the east, out in the Bay, the waves are building quickly. But not all is smooth sailing! Andiamo has to turn sharply, first one way and then the other, to avoid lobster pots!
Andiamo worked her way through numerous islands and shoals to reach Port Clyde, a harbor that is still more working than pleasure boats.
Next is Harbor Island Harbor, a little nick of a place in the middle of Muscongus Bay.
And finally, Pemaquid Point, which marks the western side of Muscongus Bay.
But, we're not quite to Christmas Cove. First, there is a narrow passage we need to go through called the Thread of Life.
And now we go through the needle.
Once through The Needle, we turn and head north up the Damriscotta River to Christmas Cove in Insert A on the chart.
Christmas has come early!
