So much is written about the coast of Maine that one may overlook Maine's rivers. Yet Maine's rivers are exquisite and fascinating. This post is a story of some of the rivers of Maine. We leave the Kennebec, travel down the Sasanoa, meet the Sheepscot and cross over to the Townsend Gut and finally reach Boothbay Harbor.

At the lower right corner of the chart you can see a bit of the Kennebec River. Andiamo traveled up the Kennebec as far as the Bath Iron Works, then turned into the Sasanoa and started down the River.

We first went under this bridge.

Then we meandered down the river. Some places it was placid. Other places it was like a cauldron.

The tide was at its lowest as we made this trip. For all of the narrowness, the most shallow spot on the river was 11 feet deep.

We got all the way down through features such as Upper Hell Gate and Lower Hell Gate, the Knubble, Goose Rock Passage, Robinhood Cove, the Sheepscot River and Townsend Gut.

In the Gut, there is a bascule bridge where we needed to stop and wait for the bridge tender to open the bridge.

And now it's open!

From here, it was a short hop into Boothbay and then north to Boothbay Harbor for fuel and our marina.

Cheers,

Andiamo
